Import Requirements
Age Restriction: Tanzania does not impose an age limit on imported used cars.
Additional Excise Duty: Vehicles aged 8 years or more from the year of manufacture are subject to an additional excise duty:
Inspection: A roadworthiness inspection is mandatory by an authorized agency (such as JEVIC or QISJ) to ensure vehicles meet safety and environmental standards.
Duties and Taxes
Vehicles with Engine Capacity Up to 2,000cc:
Import Duty: 25% of the dutiable value ; VAT: 20% of the dutiable value.
Total: 50% of the dutiable value.
Vehicles with Engine Capacity Above 2,000cc:
Import Duty: 25% of the dutiable value; Excise Duty: 10% of the dutiable value.
VAT: 20% of the dutiable value
Total: 65% of the dutiable value.
Documentation Required
Bill of Lading: Proof of shipment.
Export Certificate: Proof of exportation from the country of origin.
Proforma Invoice: Details of the vehicle's purchase price.
JEVIC or QISJ Certificate: Inspection certificate confirming roadworthiness.
Agent’s Authorization Letter: Authorization for a clearing agent to act on your behalf.
Import Permits: From relevant authorities such as TFDA and TBS.
Import Process
Pre-Shipment Inspection: Ensure the vehicle passes the JEVIC or QISJ inspection.
Shipping: Vehicles are typically shipped via Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) services to the Port of Dar es Salaam.
Customs Clearance: Submit the required documentation and pay applicable duties and taxes.
Registration: Register the vehicle with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to obtain Tanzanian number plates.
