Import Requirements

Age Restriction: Only vehicles up to 3 years old are permitted for importation into Sri Lanka.

Right-Hand Drive Vehicles: Only right-hand drive vehicles are permitted for importation into Sri Lanka.

Inspection: Vehicles must pass a roadworthiness inspection.

Headlights and Speedometer: Vehicles must have headlights suited for left-side driving, and speedometers must display in kilometers per hour.

Emission Standards: The vehicle must meet Sri Lanka’s emission standards.

Duties and Taxes

Vehicles up to 3 years old: 25% of the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value.

Vehicles over 3 years old: 30% of the CIF value.

Value Added Tax (VAT): 15% on the total value, including customs duty.

Excise Duty: Varies based on engine capacity and vehicle type.

Port and Airport Development Levy: 10% on vehicles.

Documentation Required

Import Permit: Issued by the Department of Import and Export Control.

Passport: A valid passport of the importer.

Invoice: The original purchase invoice detailing the vehicle's cost.

Registration Papers: Proof of the vehicle's prior registration.

Bill of Lading: Shipping document indicating the vehicle's details.

Pre-Shipment Inspection Certificate: Issued by an approved inspection agency.

Import Process

Obtain Import Permit: Apply to the Department of Import and Export Control for an import permit.

Customs Declaration: Submit required documents to Customs for clearance.

Payment of Duties and Taxes: Pay applicable duties and taxes upon arrival.

Clearance: Complete the customs clearance process with the assistance of a licensed Customs House Agent.

Registration: Register the vehicle with the Department of Motor Traffic and obtain a license to operate the vehicle in Sri Lanka.
